BAMBOO CITY

Bamboo City is a part of the 2012 Beijing Design Week public art program focusing the materiality of one of the most sustainable building materials: bamboo. Located in the former military factories, the site is within the central plaza surrounded by the gas tanks and major infrastructure towers . The concept is to create an installation to host visitors around the world under one canopy.

The natural long, strong fiber gives bamboo maximum flexibility after splitting. By combining bamboo splits with tighten ropes, the tension force it to form 3-dimensional space with organic curves.

We also developed a piece of performance art adjacent to the installation. By connecting different performers with smaller scale of the Bamboozled system, it conveys the tension between the WHOLE and INDIVIDUALS while they separate from each other.
